Daoist medicine believes that the internal mechanisms of our body are completely different from what we perceive in the exterior world. We all know that boiling point of water changes as altitude changes. Water boils at 100 °C (212 °F) at sea level, but at 93.4 °C (200.1 °F) at 1,905 meters (6,250 ft) altitude. This is the same as in our body. Pressure and temperature inside the human body are very different from what Western science has found out. There are many mysteries of our body. It is truly a black box.
From a Daoist medicine perspective, one of the reasons for high blood sugar, thickened blood and hypertension is due to intaking foods that contain refined sugar or artificial sugar (such as high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners).
There are six high-intensity sugar substitutes that have been approved for use in the US: aspartame, sucralose, neotame, acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), saccharin, and advantage. Some of these sugars are 180-600 times sweeter than cane sugar. Modern scientific research considers these artificial sugars harmless to the human body, and many people use them to avoid weight gain and diabetes, however, the body may not be able to recognize artificial chemical compounds.
According to the famous classical Chinese medicine clinician Ni Hai Xia 倪海廈 , refined sugar and artificial sugars may taste extremely sweet, but once they are inside our body, they are actually extremely sour. People who have compromised Spleen functions may not process refined or artificial sugars well.
As Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon points out, sour enters the Liver (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon, Su Wen 23 黃帝内經·素問·宣明五氣篇 ). Since the Liver cannot process such artificial chemicals, it can either be depleted and it borrows energies from its mother Zang organ, the Kidney; or such toxicity can generate toxic heat in the Liver and leads to what we call 木乘土 “Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth,” which causes indigestion symptoms, such as gas, bloating, abdominal distension, pain, sensation of fullness. It blocks the Qi mechanisms and thickens the body fluid.
Taking such sugars in the long term leads to blood thickening because blood naturally diffuses into the body fluid when it is thickened. Sour also constricts the blood vessels and causes hypertension, thrombosis, etc.
Instead of encouraging people to eat natural raw cane sugar, science points them to more chemicals — the blood thinners. We all know that pharmatheutical industry is highly lucrative because people are made dependent on medications. Needless to say, they may have to take extra medications to deal with the side effects of their current medications. Great business strategies, heavy price to pay.
